While there are definitely other alternatives to getting around NYC such as biking (read Joshua’s story), walking or taking a cab (oh no you won’t want to flag down a yellow cab trust us), here’s introducing your trusty and the one and only:
Almighty SUBWAY
Why the word ‘almighty’? That is because, it is almost 99.9% that the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) subway will be your primary mode of transport in getting around NYC.
You will also likely buy the monthly concession pass which allows you unlimited subway + bus rides in NYC. This will cost you $121.00 per month (or $1,399 a year). Each ride without the monthly pass is $2.75 – you can do the math and understand why the monthly pass is so important.
Unlimited? Here are probably some things you wouldn’t know as you first swipe your MetroCard at the gantries:
1. You must wait 18 minutes before using your “Unlimited” card
This means that you probably cannot afford to make a mistake by entering the wrong subway entrances.
At the bigger stations, it doesn’t matter which entrance you enter because both the trains running in both directions will be accessible through the same entrance of the station.
