Mt Shasta Summit

Sohaib Haider, a current member of the NUSTIAN USA’s Board of Trustees and former Treasurer, is an avid hiker and a mountaineer. This year he summited two 14K mountains Mt. Rainier/Tahoma and Mt Shasta. Mt Rainier/Tahoma, at 14,411 ft, is the most glaciated, highly technical, and a topographically prominent peak of the lower 48 states. Mt. Shasta, at 14,179 ft, is the second-highest peak of the Cascades range. These were Sohaib’s first attempts at summiting these mountains, and Sohaib dedicated both of his successful climbs to the NUSTIAN USA community and its volunteers.

Few words from Sohaib.

“I have always enjoyed the outdoors and got into mountaineering and climbing after moving to Portland, OR in 2021. I summited Mt. Hood/Wy’east, Mt. Adams/Klickitat, and a few other 10–12K PNW peaks in 2021. Still, for 2022 I wanted to summit Mt. Rainier/Tahoma as it’s the highest and arguably the most challenging mountain of the Cascades Range. I attempted Mt. Rainier/Tahoma via the advanced-level Kautz Glacier route with my experienced friends from the Portland climbing community on the morning of 7/10/2022. Everything went better than my expectations, and after 17 hours and 10K ft of climbing, we were at the summit on a blue-skied perfect PNW summer day.

I believe in climbing with intention and purpose, and when it comes to dedicating a climb to a cause, I couldn’t think of a better dedication than the NUSTIAN community and its volunteers.”
