MILWAUKEE (June 14, 2019) — Today, the governors and premiers of the Great Lakes states and provinces announced a call for increased funding to address lead and PFAS impacts in the region during the Leadership Summit for Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers in Milwaukee. Additionally, governors and premiers stressed the importance of stopping invasive species, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announcing that she has instructed the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to make blocking Asian carp its top priority.

The following statement can be attributed to Mike Shriberg, executive director of the National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center:

“Coordinated regional action to provide clean, safe, and affordable water is more important than ever. Many of our cities and towns are living with unsafe drinking water due to lead, toxic PFAS, and other serious threats. Asian carp threaten the fisheries, wildlife, economy, and way of life in Great Lakes communities. Inaction will only make these problems worse and more costly to solve. We encourage the region’s governors and premiers to act with urgency and purpose and support funding and policy solutions that ensure people, fish, and wildlife have clean water now and for generations to come. Today is a great start to making sure our regions leaders work together for clean, safe , and affordable water for all.“
