Happy New Year! Yes, we’re aware that it’s July. Summertime is when the nwPlus team unwinds and gets pumped for another year of engaging with the local tech community and its students!

We’re sure you’re just as excited as we are for the upcoming summer + school year, so we’ve prepared a sneak peek for our events (new, and old) this year.

First, a recap

2020/2021 was a whirlwind of a school year. After moving to a completely virtual team following cmd-f in March 2020 (our last in-person hackathon!), the nwPlus team thought long and hard about how to stay connected while being apart.

Last year, we continued with some familiar events near and dear to our hearts, nwHacks (the largest hackathon in Western Canada) and cmd-f (British Columbia’s all-women* hackathon). One of our beloved hackathons, UBC Local Hack Day, underwent a ✨ transformation ✨ and rebranded into HackCamp (our beginner-friendly hackathon). Our hackathons moved online, and garnered hacking from students around the world!

Last year we also had some new initiatives to reach our community. Our Campus Ambassador Program’s organizers and members worked hard to engage with students outside of our own student bubble here at the University of British Columbia.

Adding onto the engagement, we came together as a club and created the nwPlus Workshop Series to share the knowledge via online workshops. Topics included technical skills, career development, and everything in-between.

Last but not least, with everyone stuck at home, we wanted to continue with mentorship opportunities for our hackers, and engage the next generation of female* students in tech. connect-f, our mentorship program borne out of the cmd-f organizer team, worked day and night to connect female* high school students to women* in tech.

And these are just some of the things we ran last year!

Now, to the announcements…

This year, there’s a whole roster of events (again, new and old!) to look forward to:

July 2021: connect-f Mentorship Applications

September 2021: Hiring (nwPlus Team and Campus Ambassador Program)

November 2021: HackCamp

January 2022: nwHacks

March 2022: cmd-f
