To the Toronto Blue Jay’s fan who threw a can of beer on the field at the close of the 7th inning of the AL Wild Card game, the question must be posed…What the hell were you thinking?

It really could be described better that announcer Rod Darling said on TBS, “That was one of the dumbest things.”…and it really was.

With the Baltimore Orioles in the field, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. launched a ball to the warning track in left field. Baltimore’s left fielder, Hyun Soo Kim locked in on the ball as it descended towards him, he prepared to make the play. At the same instance, a rogue fan decided to play spoiler and selfishly threw what appeared to be a beer can at Kim.

Thankfully Kim wasn’t hit by the projectile and he completed the catch to end the inning. Centerfielder Adam Jones was enraged, pointing his finger and yelling towards the section in left field. Manager Buck Showalter ran on the field and spent the break between innings speaking with the umpiring crew.

When your team is tied 2–2 with the season on the line, had that been called for fan interference and Kim wasn’t able to make the play it might have had a much uglier outcome.

The Toronto fans were engaged with the game since the first inning, hanging on every pitch and understandably so. It’s high drama and it’s what makes the postseason so exciting. Especially in a winner-take-all single elimination game. Rooting for your team and acting out in an absurd manner like throwing objects on the field are two completely different things.

The passion of sports fueled by alcohol aren’t always a good mix and unfortunately Toronto fans have in the past taken out their frustrations out by hurling a cold brew on the field of the Rogers Center. One instance last season includes a beer landing on a baby in the stands.

Moral of the story — enjoy the game, learn how to control yourself and get home safe with your dignity intact.
