Less than a week after the New York Mets season ended in heartbreaking fashion, Matt Harvey is starting his journey back to the mound for 2017.

Harvey’s season had ended a few months earlier when he underwent a surgical procedure to correct his thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder back in July. Harvey was at Citi field on Saturday throwing off the flat ground, preparing for his journey back to the mound.

Harvey took to Instagram and posted a picture saying, “Working the mechanics #132DaysTillST17 #LGM.”

TOS is a rare condition. It is caused by the compression of the blood vessels and nerves in the shoulder. Harvey’s procedure included a removal of one of his ribs.

The 27-year-old struggled through most of his starts him 2016 before being diagnosed. From the onset, it was clear Harvey wasn’t pitching to his potential. He ended with the worst numbers of his career, 4–10 with a 4.86 ERA.

Harvey is expected to make a full recovery and plans on being a productive part of the 2017 Mets rotation.
