Make a list
First thing I did was searching for places to visit in New York, just google it and make your New York wishlist. There are also plenty of blogs with different places or explanations, some are Timeout, USNews, NewYorkPass, also you can check for events, there are thousands.
How should you make your list? Just look for what you like. For example, I looked for architecture, nices places to take photos, big places, sports, etc.
I had mine list featuring: Theater District, Rockefeller Center, The Oculus & WTC, Central Park, The Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Little Italy, The High Line, Broadway Theatre, 5th Avenue, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library , St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Bryant Park, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Metropolitan Opera House, The New York Beer and Brewery Tour, Soho, Greenwich Village, Flatiron Building, Prospect Park, Madison Square Garden, Staten Island Ferry, Chelsea Market, Whitney Museum of American Art.

So, once I had my list, I made my map:
I was based in Brooklyn, once you have your map you can make your itineraries and routes. I like to keep plans opened, you never know. I had really bad weather (wind, rain, cold temperatures).
So What happened?
This is what happened. I lost almost three kilos on my week at New York city. On my first three days I had almost seen all my list, because I was walking with my cam about 20 kilometres a day. And as a photographer I walk slow. So the next four days I decided to join jazz clubs, nice places in Brooklyn to get in touch with people. I specially recommend: House of Yes, Miss Favela, Caribbean Social Club, Bembe, Baby it´s all right, La milagrosa, etc.
