Product Design: Design My Home
An Indigenous Product
Introduction
We always have a dream to buy our own home and we actually spend lots of time decorating and designing them according to the dream we always used to see. From colour to furniture and from interior to appliances choosing everything is becoming a confusing job.
DesignMyHome gives you a solution to design your dream home before you actually invest in it.
A Story Behind Every Product
Back in 2016 I and my wife jointly purchased our first home. It was really a great feeling :). We both were working hard to actually get this happen. Being a middle-class family you have lots of dreams surrounding a particular dream. We had lots of plans for our new home. We have done 100-time meetings, visiting the International Trade Expo, watching home decorating videos on Youtube, reading articles, etc to just get a perfect idea about our new home. We all have dreams but when it comes to giving it an actual shape we all get confused. We have lots of information but we can’t actually figure out what to do.
The Real Problem
Being a user and a visual designer I have lost of visualization about what our new home should look like. But when it comes to logistics like furniture, colours and interiors we often get confused. The real problem is when we select furniture from our nearest showrooms or from online we don’t have the actual visualization about how this furniture will actually look into space. We have the data like, size, colour and other things but can’t visualize this with the actual vacant space of our new home. As a user, I have faced this issue. We had bought our furniture from our nearest shop and online portal like Papperfry.com. But both the time couldn’t make yourself 100% satisfied with the visualization. You have empty rooms like a blank canvas, you need to fill it with colours and other stuff.
Somehow we have managed to decorate our new home but it was not 100% accurate what we have visualized. Also, it gives us lots of pain to select furniture and all. But as a UI/UX designer, I really found it a user problem. I realised that people like me who buy their new home or who are renovating there may be facing the same problem. From here my products journey started.
My Target User
Man and Women (Mostly Women):
As I faced in my situation, I think both the Man and Woman are actually involved in the design process of their new home. But most of the cases the women are taking the lead in this process. So my target users are mostly women.
Working and House maker:
Here we can target both the working and house making women and Men’s.
Age between 30 to 45:
In this age group, the people are actually investing in their home and have the energy to do with their own.
Costly interior design:
In this group, those who don’t want to actually invest inexpensive interior design.
User Research
After having the target user and I was searching for them. But luckily they were around me. We have purchased our home in a big residential complex, where around 400 families have booked their flats. That’s all, I got my users.
I have prepared some questionnaires and taken interviews with each of the flat owners. Here I had followed the rules of Empathy mapping.
Says: They said they were facing a similar problem when I explained my pain.
Thinks: After sharing my idea, they think this can be useful.
Does: I have given them some idea about how my app can help them in this regard and I gave them some task to do.
Feels: Most of them are excited, some are not sure as they are not tech-savvy.
