Task

Introduce running challenges as a new feature to improve social interaction and active usage of Runtastic apps.

Goals

  1. Increase Retention Rate
Motivate users to come back to the app on a daily basis.
  2. Increase Social Activity
Motivate users to share their achievements with friends through social networks. Motivate them to engage with friends in order to invite them to the app. Increase the number of mentions of the Runtastic brand in social networks.

Ways to Achieve

For achieving retention goal besides basic rules and minimum requirements to complete, I’m adding competitions within each challenge. You will be able to compete with people from all over the globe as well as with your friends. This should motivate users to return to the app to check their progress on a daily basis, because almost all challenges have strict rules and require daily involvement.

For achieving social activity goal I’m adding some gamification and “bold titles” to motivate them to win a better achievement and make them feel they participate in something really big and global — as a result, increase a chance of sharing this with their friends.

Challenges

Adding “bold titles” to challenges will increase the chance that user will join it. More likely user will join “Europe Marathon” rather than the challenge with regular title like “Run 42 km” — but from the global point of view they are the same.

Also we can support famous competitions like Berlin Marathon and let our users participate remotely from anywhere.

Users will be more motivated to join and then to share results with others if they feel they accomplished something really big.

Example of Challenge

This challenge requires to run at least 5 km per day 7 days in a row.

On this screen you can see challenge progress, running statistics per day and leaderboards (global and friends).

Depending on the final result (total distance for all 7 days) you will receive an achievement. Read more about achievements in the next section.

Achievements

Gradation of achievements will help us to cover wider audience (everyone will have a chance to be rewarded) and also will add a competitive part (try to do your best to defeat others). The first goal is to motivate people at least join and complete the challenge. The next one — compete with others for the best possible result.

This number can be adjusted later based on previous results: number of participants and how their results are close to each other.

Differentiate regular achievements and challenge medals to add more value to challenges.

Let’s make them proud of what they have achieved and most likely they will share it with their friends.

Place in the App

Due to a need of fast access I have put achievements and challenges in “Progress” section to be on the top level of the app navigation. Users should constantly come here on a daily basis. Easy navigation will help them check updates quickly.

Promotion

Periodically invite users to join new challenges.

Note: this is my personal concept.
