What do you think about the picture? Is the bad design?

The picture show a walk/corridor connecting two building? What is the problem? There are two problem about it design. The first problem is the handled are design for pulling than pushing. The second is sets of doors work in opposite ways. To pass through the walkway you must first PULL open one set of doors and then PUSH open the second set of doors.

How about the solution ?

1. Installing the swing doors that can be opened by pulling and pushing

2. How about to installing appropriate door handles. Flat push will be installed on the sides of the doors to be pushed. The pull-type handles like those shown here would be installed on the sides of the doors to be pulled.

3. PUSH and PULL labels could be added to the doors, but this would not be an ideal solution. Labels would only work for people who could read the language and under adequate lighting condition.

How bout he product behaves and is used by people in this real world? It is about the way people feel about it(pleasure and satisfaction) when using it by looking, holding, opening/closing.

What to design ?

1. Need to take into account :

— Who takes user are : gender, age

— What activities are being carried out : what is the people do, it can be pushing/ pulling something,

— Where the interaction is taking place : in public area likes coffee or private area likes bathroom.

2 . Need to optimize the interaction user activities needs : Any activities that fails to add value for the customer should be eliminated first or minimized.

3. Understanding user needs

— Need to take into account what people are good and bad at.

— Consider what might provide in the way currently do

— Think through what might provide quality user experience

— Listen to what people want and get them involved

— Use tried and tested user centered methods.
