Wedding Card Design

One image to show the whole story

Weddings are fun, filled with love, laughter, and happy vibes. It is one of the most important days for a couple. They put in their plans, dreams, and energy to this event; and it all starts with an invitation card.

I met one such lovely couple who, after 8 years of dating each other, have decided to take step to next phase of life. They happen to have a huge list of important friends who are living far away from them. They wished to invite them all with a small, simple digital invite that has a personal touch.

(Note: All the details in the designs are fake. They don’t wish to invite the whole internet, obviously.)

Data Points

I started by collecting stories they shared together, and found that they were quite adventurous. Hiking mountains, running together, cycling as hobby, you name it, they have done it!

Then I moved to collecting their interests, and with no wonder it came out to be gardening, and taking long walks in the park. They are close to nature, and love physical activities!

For all the good reasons they remind me of the movie Up.

• They are adventurous.
• They love nature.
• They are on their way to their paradise fall. Together!

Once I pitched this idea to them they immediately said yes! In their words, “It will be like going on the adventure the Up couple wanted to.”

Work plan

There were following pointers to work upon:

• There should be couple’s personal touch (Colors, way to talking to friends, etc) For colors, they want it to be colorful as well as calm.
• There should be a reference to the iconic scene from Up movie.
• There should be a connection to nature.
• All of this, along with event details should fit in one image.
• The image should be mobile phone friendly (dimensions), as major mode of transmission is via mobile phone.
• The file should not be very graphic heavy. So that is easy to send, and easy on eyes too.

I distributed the focus areas as follow:

Information Architecture of the Invitation card

This lovely couple loves pastel shade (yay!), and they also share their love for bright warm colors. I settled the color pallet to a mix of warm and cool colors.

Reduced size of illustrations by choosing smooth illustrations with least number of corners and edges. Image dimensions’ ratio is 2:3 which is easily viewed in all mobile phones.

After defining the Overview Level, I started working on the Detail level:

• Brought in Nature to Up Movie theme by replacing balloon’s by leaves.
• Leaves become the base of the showing the couple’s emotions.
• Different colored leaves used to showcase the variety of seasons and emotions they shared together.
• Flowers added to show happiness and bring in happy feel to the graphics.
• Arranged to have enough white space and ample space for details.

Moving on to the Information level,

• Quote added to match the Up movie theme ‘adventure’ and presented in a way that shows the couple’s zeal.
• Flower-shaped mandala added to highlight the event details.

And thus, finally, here is the digital wedding card, custom-made specially for this adventurous nature-loving couple!
