🎣 That Fishing Line Above Manhattan

I get people’s inclination to stay out of the city on motorcycles. I really do.

Among the sound & congestion toll cameras, 18 miles of fishing line weaves through Manhattan. That fishing line protects the sanctities of the Sabbath.

The Jewish Center in Manhattan maintains an interactive Google Map marking the boundary of the eruv.

The Unseen Perimeter

The fishing line is attached to posts around the perimeter of the city, from First Street to 126th. This string is part of an eruv, a Jewish symbolic enclosure. This isn’t your typical fishing line; it’s a delicate, clear wire that forms an unbroken loop around the island of Manhattan. This unassuming line serves an extraordinary purpose — it defines a domestic perimeter for the Sabbath. Most walkers and riders throughout the city never notice it.

A Tradition of Rest

The Sabbath, a day of rest and reflection, is a deeply cherished tradition for many. It’s a time to step back from the chaos of the world, pause, and appreciate life’s simpler joys. For the Jewish community in New York City, observing the Sabbath often involves refraining from work, technology, and even driving.

The Sabbath Boundary

Nearly two millennia ago, the concept of the “eruv” emerged as a practical solution for Jewish communities striving to observe the stringent Sabbath laws, particularly the prohibition against carrying items on this sacred day. To ensure a peaceful and uninterrupted observance of the Sabbath, the clear fishing wire is tied around the entire perimeter of Manhattan. This symbolic boundary creates a separation between the bustling city and the tranquility of the Sabbath. Within this invisible circle, the pace slows, and the Sabbath is welcomed with open arms.

The Sabbath, a day of rest and spiritual reflection, imposes strict regulations. Among them, the law stipulates that nothing may be transported from a private dwelling, known as the domestic zone, into the public sphere on Saturdays. This encompasses everyday essentials like house keys and wallets. It even extends to seemingly simple acts, such as pushing a baby stroller. For parents with young children, these restrictions would essentially confine them to their homes on this holy day.

The Unexpected Connection

What does this have to do with motorcycles and the NYCMOTO community?

As riders, we understand the value of freedom, open roads, and the exhilaration of the ride. But we also appreciate the importance of respecting traditions and boundaries, just like the Sabbath wire does for Manhattan. Our love for the motorcycle culture doesn’t mean we forget the importance of community, understanding, and coexistence. As diverse as our backgrounds are in the city, we all (mostly) align around the same ideals when it comes to riding culture. Somehow, we all manage to coexist.

Riding in Harmony

In a city as diverse as New York, where cultures and traditions intermingle, there’s a unique harmony that emerges.

As part of the NYCMOTO community, we celebrate our shared passion for riding. But we also cherish the rich tapestry of traditions and stories that make up this incredible city. So next time you rip through the streets of Manhattan, take a moment to appreciate the hidden threads that connect us all. Campy, yeah, but let yourself think about it.

In the end, it’s not just about the ride; it’s about the journey and the stories we collect along the way. So, keep your liters, twins, singles, and whatever else running, respect the traditions, and ride on.

🏖️ 🛣️ Let’s go on a tour of the Hamptons

This weekend is shaping up to be beautiful weather-wise so head out to the Hamptons and run this route (from last week) while you have the chance. Do this ride while I’m busy working on the next one.

A buddy of mine and I headed out to the Hamptons for a weekend and explored damn near all of it. He knew the area well but was my first time there.

We rode around the South Fork through Sag Harbor twists, out to the Montauk lighthouse and hit up Dune Road on the way back.

The Montauk Lighthouse

Truly a memorable ride with awesome views, twists, fast straights, and good food.

All that makes it one of the best riding weekends I’ve had so naturally, I’ve built a route for it. Head out there before it gets too damn cold to leave the house.
