🧠 Need to know this week…

  1. 🆓 The NYCMOTO/SA1NT jacket/pants giveaway is wrapping up. More info below or click here to enter
  2. Get your winter bike cover from SealSkin. It’s what I’ve been using daily.
  3. Revzilla is running their holiday sale with some sick deals from Sena, Dainese, Agv, etc
  4. 🥊 Regardless what you think of Gore-Tex, these Dainese gloves look legit
  5. ▶️ Here’s a video in which an electric bike tows shit. Umm, a 50 seater bus.
  6. 🐂 💪 The Movember charity event with Lamborghini / Ducati and Manhattan Motorcars was awesome
  7. 🧑‍💻 We’re getting more and more car tech coming to our bikes. Not crazy about this transition but I have a feeling that the new generation of riders will appreciate it.

The anatomy of a good ride

We’ve all been on shitty rides and some of us have been on good ones.

But what makes a great ride?

Honestly, it’s hard to pinpoint but a great ride really depends on what you value. A shitty route can be great if you’ve got the right people with you. You can end up having to get towed at the end of a ride but still tell everyone how great of a ride it was. It can be hot as hell (or cold as hell or wet) and that seems to bother you very little.

So while this list is purely subjective, so is the rest of the shit I write. I imagine a lot of you experience shit in the same way I do and would probably agree.

  1. Who you go with matters, especially when it’s on motorcycles. You really want to know their riding style and their fit with the rest of the group. Going on a ride with 4 speed freaks and 1 rubber band (get it?) will get old fast for the guys up front and suck for whoever’s in the back.
  2. Yeah, the route matters but not in the way you think. I’d rather take a well planned shitty route any day of the week. I don’t want the leader constantly second guessing themselves or turning to the rest of the riders for ideas. I’m not leading because I want a break. Don’t make me work for this. Your opinion on this may vary but this is my damn newsletter.
  3. Speaking of riders, the number of people you go with matters a great deal. This one really is subjective though as some riders love the idea of 20 bike rides while others go at it alone. All that I can say is this: if you enjoy smaller groups, don’t be shocked when you hate that ride with 30 riders.
  4. Communication is everything. Whether you’re using comms systems (check out Cardo’s new setup and use the NYCMOTO23 code), hand signals, or throwing rocks at each other (bonus points for helmet hits), get this down right from the beginning.
  5. If you’re going out with a sizable group of 10+, have a riders meeting before you set out. Communicate on following distance, speeds, route distance & make-up (highway, backroads, etc), gas & food stops, what happens if you get separated, etc.

Here’s my definition of a good ride: 4–10 guys total, mostly same skill level, have ridden together before numerous times, multiple gas stops (for breaks, drinks, and umm gas), breakfast/lunch, 2/3 twisty & 1/3 highway (you’ll be thankful to have the highway miles for giving your wrists a break), and gooooood weather.

Do yourself a favor and take this route

A few weeks back, I linked to a route I put together out by Ashokan.

The route itself was fantastic but was missing a few key elements:

  1. I didn’t get any riding footage of it because my GoPro decided to rebel
  2. Almost ran out of gas so I wasn’t able to really enjoy the road
  3. Had to bail early due to a worn tire in our group

That road stayed in my head and I vowed to go back again this season and do it right. Last weekend, I did just that and took 3 friends with me.

What an amazing ride.

If you’re going to hit route 44 (and you should if you’re doing this outside of a heavy traffic day), you’ve got two hairpins on the route. Call them out in advance if you’re riding with others as they can come up fast if you’re moving.

Check out the route and hit up the Youtube video for the full section of 46/2/52:
