Do this when you buy a new sport bike

I just bought a new Gixxer… what should I do to the bike?

I get this question a lot and it’s an interesting one. My first response is always the same: ride the fucking thing!

A bit aggressive, sure. But what good is a clapped out gixxer without knowing what you’re comparing it to? Go out and learn your bike. You’ll know what needs changing and how to prioritize pretty soon.

Generally though, this is what I end up doing to my bikes after break-in:

  1. Exhaust. Duh. That new liter gixxer might be a beast but it sounds like som unholy mix of a Vespa and the exhaust fan above your stove.
Let’s leave out the discussion on loud pipes saving lives. Or don’t 🫂 .
There are two main types of exhaust systems:
  2. Mufflers-only exhaust systems, also called slip-on or bolt-on systems, retain the factory headpipe(s) and replace just the muffler.
  3. Full exhaust systems replace everything from the head(s) to the back of the bike.
  4. Clutch/brake levers. As far as I know, all bikes ship with shitty, mostly non-adjustable levers. Aftermarket levers are lighter, full adjustable, and most will have breakaway points in case you go down. You can even find tricked out carbon levers if you look hard enough so you can rest easy knowing that you shaved 2 ounces of weight after having eaten that 2 pound burger.
  5. Suspension tune/setting. This is the cheapest and most impactful change you can make to your bike. Ducatis are manufactured to fit tiny Italian men and gixxers are usually ridden in shorts, sneaks and a wife beater. If you fall outside of the norm for your bike, get your suspension set by a professional.
I weigh 225lbs which is far outside the typical 150lb Italian so I headed over to Washington Cycle to get my shit set for $70. Night & day.
  6. Tail Tidy. A wee bit controversial but this is damn near a necessity in the city Tail Tidy’s accomplish two things:
  7. They strip away the monstrosity that is the license plate holder. If you must know, yes there are actual legalities around displaying your license plate in NYS.
  8. A tidy plate keeps the cameras confused. IYKYK.
  9. Tires. I wouldn’t go changing out your stock tires on day 1; unless you have a very specific purpose to do so, ride through them and note how it feels on different terrain. For your next set, change it up. Sport bike tires last 3–6k miles on average so you’ll go through a set or two (or more!) every season. Find a set that work well for you.

How about you? What’s the first thing you change on your new bike?

Too cold for a long ride?

Yeah, it’s getting cold as hell out. But maybe you’ve hit a 50F day (like we did this past weekend) and want to get out for an hour or two.

Take this route.

We’ll start from Ossining and cover most of the twists around Harriman with plenty of options to shorten or extend the trip.

I’ve run this route so many times and some of you have probably as well but until there is a better option so close to the city, this is our go-to.
