The majority of NYC Men Teach program participants intend to pursue teaching careers after participating in the program, according to a new implementation evaluation. The evaluation, conducted by Westat and Metis Associates, found that 86% of program participants reported that they are likely to continue to pursue a teaching career and 85% are likely to recommend the program to other aspiring teachers.

NYC Men Teach works to increase the number of male teachers of color in New York City classrooms by engaging, recruiting, supporting and inspiring men of color to enter into, and remain, in the field of education. The program is implemented as a partnership between the New York City Department of Education (DOE) and the City University of New York. Early in 2018, NYC Men Teach officially reached the program goal of placing 1,000 men of color in the New York City public school teaching pipeline.

The study was designed to obtain stakeholder feedback on the program and to identify opportunities for improvement of its implementation. Other key findings include:

  • Networking opportunities, information sessions, mentoring and teacher certification exam preparation were the types of support most valued by program participants.
  • Communication efforts to build awareness of NYC Men Teach and person-to-person communications to encourage potential participants to apply were highly successful.

The evaluation used a mixed-methods approach that drew on data collected from NYC Men Teach participants, DOE and CUNY administrators, and CUNY program staff.

NYC Men Teach was launched as part of the Young Men’s Initiative (YMI). Established in 2011, the mission of YMI is to develop and champion policies, programs, and partnerships that holistically support the success of young men of color throughout New York City.

As the program continues to evolve, NYC Opportunity looks forward to continuing to support NYC Men Teach in its work to increase the diversity of the City’s educators.
