NYC Opportunity’s Vicky Virgin was honored with a 2019 Excellence in International Migration Scholarship Award from the Center for Migration Studies. The award was presented on October 17th at CMS’s annual gala, which marked its 55th year of promoting understanding between immigrants and receiving communities and advocating for public policies that protect the rights of migrants and refugees.

Virgin was honored for her years of research on the demographics of the immigrant population in New York City. This year, Virgin, who is a research associate in the Poverty Research Unit, created NYC Opportunity’s first-ever Immigrant Poverty Report, An Economic Profile of Immigrants in New York City.” The report examines the labor force participation, earnings, poverty rates, and other economic measures for immigrants, broken down by immigration status. It also, for the first time, incorporates the legal status of immigrants into an experimental version of the NYCgov Poverty Measure, which will help policymakers understand and address immigrant poverty.

“We are very proud that Vicky has been given this well-deserved recognition from an organization we work with closely on issues that are vital to many New Yorkers,” said Christine D’Onofrio, Director of the Poverty Research Unit.
