The Centre for Public Impact, an organization that promotes more effective government performance, has released an “enhanced case study” on the Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity (NYC Opportunity). The case study notes that NYC Opportunity was launched “as an innovation agency with the aim to raise low-income New Yorkers out of poverty and deprivation.” In more than a decade of existence, the Centre for Public Impact found, NYC Opportunity “has achieved significant impact . . . throughout the city.”

The case study highlights some of NYC Opportunity’s major accomplishments, including:

  • Launching over 70 programs in collaboration with 40 different city agencies
  • Partnering in the establishment of City University of New York (CUNY) ASAP, one of the most successful community college completion programs in the U.S., which has doubled graduation rates for the students in it
  • Being influential in developing the methodology for the US Census Bureau’s supplemental poverty measure
  • Receiving two grants from the federal Social Innovation Fund, one to replicate five promising models in New York City and other U.S. cities, and a second to test the impact of integrating mental health and social services
