Want to join the most progressive digital delivery team in NYC government? NYC Planning Labs was founded in the summer of 2017 to achieve better outcomes by embracing open technology, modern/agile development, and user-centered design to build impactful products with City planners.

Since the beginning, we’ve shipped several projects that make critical data more accessible, and help the planning community navigate regulations and complex civic processes.

Here are a few projects you’ll love

ZoLa puts a wealth of property-level data at your fingertips, through an intuitive map UI.

We’re an open-source, JavaScript-heavy shop. We like Ember.js for our ambitious web apps, but we’re also pivoting towards React, and we’re always learning and exploring new technologies. We like Express.js for our APIs, and recently started tinkering with Koa.js. We’re also doing cutting-edge work on open-source spatial tools — using Carto, PostGIS, Maputnik, and MapboxGL — for creating beautiful, responsive maps and robust spatial data processing.

How we work

We have clear, progressive, civic tech values that underscore how we work:

  • Open by default — Make things open, it makes things better. We know coding in the open makes it easier to build, share, and learn.
  • Build with, not for — We try to be as inclusive as possible when building apps, inviting our entire agency, and external guests to our weekly demos.
  • Ship early, ship often — We are agile. We experiment a lot. And we like to test real software with real users instead of focusing on preconceived requirements.
  • Document and disseminate — We love to share exciting projects and the lessons we’ve learned through blog posts, social media, and skill-shares.

What you get

  • Salary: $100,000–$115,000 commensurate with experience
  • New York City health benefits
  • 15 paid vacation days a year, with an additional 11 paid Federal holidays
  • Eligibility for a host of NYC retirement plans
  • Agency-issued MacBook Pro and dual-monitor workstation
  • Modern office in downtown Manhattan
  • Strong work/life balance

Need more convincing?

Some of the cool stuff you’ll get to do (and be around):

  • Spatial data development and analysis using modern tools like PostGIS
  • Working with renowned colleagues in one of the largest city planning agencies in the United States:
  • Creating data that feed into digital tools that inform planning decisions

Other fun aspects:

  • Working in the building that prompted the 1916 Zoning Resolution
  • Weekly wonky map quiz emails
  • Being part of a diverse, dynamic team committed to improving the state of data in NYC Planning

Do you share these values?
