City Planning’s Geographic Research Unit (GRU) is looking for someone who cares passionately about data quality and loves the intricacies of the City’s geography. GRU’s work is key to citywide operations, including the 911 dispatch system.

We manage the city’s property address directory, which captures the relationship between addresses, buildings, and tax parcels. If there’s a new street, we digitize it. When election districts are redrawn following the decennial census, we work with the Board of Elections to implement those changes. We maintain the data that tells you if a street is one-way and whether it has a bike lane. We know when your garbage will be picked up and which community board serves your area.

All this data is stored in a complex data model and can be accessed via a geocoding application that needs to handle situations like multiple Hillside Avenues in Queens, house numbers that are out of order, former beach communities with unique addressing issues, and streets that have multiple names.

If this sounds exciting, you’re the kind of person we want. Please see this posting for an Associate Geographic Data Specialist. We look forward to talking with you.
