You will have a lead role in building tools to improve how the GIS team completes regular tasks and processes, re-envisioning GIS technologies used by the agency’s 100+ GIS users, and documenting processes and procedures. This work will be informed by outreach efforts to GIS users to understand their use cases for geospatial data, spatial analysis, web mapping, and automated processes. You should be knowledgeable of spatial data and analyses, comfortable sharing your expertise with GIS users by providing technical support, informed about good data maintenance and documentation practices, and excited about encouraging new ways to leverage GIS technologies within the agency.

You will assist the Open Data Coordinator in maintaining and expanding the agency’s open data offerings and answer questions from the public about DCP’s data.

We are looking for someone who is excited about modernizing and expanding our GIS technology offerings, and improving our data maintenance processes. If you’re interested in shaping the future of city planning, building smarter government, and joining a successful team you should definitely apply.

About DCP’s GIS team

The Enterprise Data Management (EDM) team maintains core city datasets, such as street centerlines and building addresses, which power the 911 system. The EDM team ensures that DCP Planners have access to quality data to inform decisions that ultimately shape NYC. The GIS team, a unit within EDM, manages the agency’s extensive spatial data warehouse, collaborates on the agency’s data strategy, promotes good data practices amongst data users throughout the agency, and publishes the agency’s open data for public access. Our data products support a myriad of data systems and applications used by City Planning, other city agencies, and the public.

The GIS team is a small team where you’ll have the opportunity to make an immediate impact. We are currently looking to modernize our GIS infrastructure, and improve our existing data maintenance and distribution processes and systems. We’re going to trust your opinion and expect you to help the team make the right decisions. You’ll be empowered to dive into our processes, test new tools, and give your thoughts on how we can do better.

We are only a small part of DCP, New York City’s planning agency, one of the largest city planning agencies in the world. You’ll have a chance to work with brilliant colleagues, many of them renowned experts in their fields.
