We’re hiring a data analyst to complement the existing talent and expand the abilities of NYC Planning’s Regional Planning Division. We’re looking for someone with technical experience, a willingness to learn, and an interest in communicating metropolitan-scaled planning issues to help us develop tools and refine datasets that enhance our understanding of the city and surrounding tri-state region.

About NYC Planning’s Regional Planning Division

The Regional Planning Division was formed in 2016 as a commitment to expanding the City’s focus and leadership on planning issues that span beyond its borders. The division’s work is rooted in a robust research and data analytics program that aims to contextualize demographic, economic, housing, mobility and other trends, and support agency work by coordinating with other local governments and key stakeholders on long-term planning objectives.

What you’ll be working on?

  • Processing and assisting in the analysis of various datasets to inform planning and policy decisions
  • Assist with the maintenance and expansion of Regional Planning Division applications and visualizations, such as Metro Region Explorer.
  • Assisting in performing quality assurance of data files, and documenting work procedures and methodologies
  • Preparing analyses, visualizations, and presentations in innovative formats that are accessible to a variety of audiences

You should apply if:

  • You have 1 or more years of experience (or relevant education) in data development, analyses, visualization, or computer programming
  • You are proficient in programming languages such as Python or R, and have experience working with data in Excel.
  • You are familiar with spatial data formats and have experience working with spatial data in ArcGIS, QGIS, Carto, GeoPandas, or Tableau
  • You have experience using U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other administrative datasets
  • You are comfortable communicating about data with colleagues of varying levels of proficiency, and are able to work cooperatively within a team
