We’re hiring a data scientist to complement the existing talent and expand the abilities of NYC Planning’s Population Division. We’re looking for someone with both technical expertise and a solid foundation in the social sciences to help us develop tools, and refine datasets, that enhance our understanding of New York City’s rich sociodemographic landscape.

About NYC Planning’s Population Division

The Population Division is responsible for the compilation, analysis, and dissemination of census and related administrative data for city agencies and local communities. We are the city’s hub of demographic expertise, providing analyses for needs assessment, program planning, and policy formulation. Importantly, we also produce independent population estimates and projections. Our division is also leading the city’s evaluation of the latest 2020 Census data.

What you’ll be working on?

  • Working with the IT division’s Enterprise Data Management and Labs teams to regularly update Population Division applications, such as Population FactFinder
  • Processing and assisting in the analysis of various datasets to inform planning and policy decisions
  • Publishing demographic analyses in innovative formats so that it’s available to a variety of audiences
  • Assisting in performing quality assurance of data files, and documenting work procedures and methodologies
  • Representing the division at intra-agency meetings and coordinating work with other divisions

You should apply if:

  • You have 1 or more years of experience (or relevant education) in data development, analyses, or computer programming
  • You are proficient in: programming languages such as Python and SQL; database management systems like PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite; and statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS, R, and Excel.
  • You are familiar with spatial data formats and have experience working with spatial data in ArcGIS, PostGIS, QGIS, Carto, or GeoPandas
  • You have experience using Census and administrative datasets
  • You are knowledgeable of statistical techniques
  • You are comfortable communicating about data with colleagues of varying levels of proficiency, and able to work cooperatively within a team
