Hendrix Creek near the 26th Ward Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility

We recently opened the grounds of the 26th Ward Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility to members of the Audubon Society for their annual Christmas Bird Count. Located on Hendrix Creek and adjacent to Shirley Chisholm State Park (which we restored!), the 26th Ward facility is a microclimate typically producing several bird species each year, which are not recorded elsewhere in Brooklyn.

Left: Northern Mockingbird; Right: Orange-crowned Warbler
Left: Pine Warbler; Right: Spotted Sand Piper

Rare birds to be seen in Brooklyn this time of year that were noted in the count included an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Common Yellowthroat, and a Pine Warbler. Thank you to plant staff for helping to make this event happen!

Left: Audubon Society Members; Right: 26th Ward staff member Parmanand Sankar, who helped facilitate the event.
