We are continuing to make progress on the Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel 600 feet below the Hudson River. Excavation of the tunnel was completed last August. Since then, workers have been installing massive steel liners that will provide structural stability to the new tunnel. As of late April, 180 steel liners had been brought into the tunnel, and 155 of them had been welded together. A total of 230 steel liners will be installed in total. Each liner section is 16 feet in diameter, 40 feet long and weighs approximately 106,000 pounds after the rebar is tacked on the inside. After they’re installed, workers will pour a final layer of concrete to form the finished tunnel. The Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel is the largest and most complex repair in the 178-year history of New York City’s water supply.
