Diving to New Depths
We recently conducted routine depth surveys and visual diving inspections of Central Park Reservoir and Silver Lake Reservoir on Staten Island.
During the bathymetric (the study of the “beds” or “floors” of waterbodies, like oceans, rivers, streams, and lakes) surveys, a captain and a hydrographer operated a 12-foot aluminum boat that was outfitted with GPS and surveying software to evaluate the reservoirs.
The surveyors assessed the amount of sediment at the bottom of the reservoirs, the structural integrity of their dams and walls, and if their capacity had changed. All of the information gathered during these surveys will help us in planning for future capital upgrades of the reservoirs. For more photos, check out our Flickr album.
