We walk past them every day, but have you ever stopped to think about the importance of a properly functioning fire hydrant?

We have dedicated experts that ensure that the city’s hydrants are functioning properly so that fire fighters have adequate and reliable access to our water supply in case of an emergency. In fact, our staff maintain and operate 109,000 fire hydrants across New York City.

To highlight and celebrate the expertise of the men and women in our operation bureaus, we recently hosted a Hydrant Hysteria competition at the Queens training yard. Nine two-person teams raced to assemble a fire hydrant as quickly as possible, showcasing their skills (and strength!).

The Hydrant Hysteria finalists. From left to right: Chris Davis, Dave Thomas, Joseph Cianciotta and Steven Duhs.

The final contest came down to Construction Laborers Steven Duhs and Joseph Cianciotta from Staten Island Repairs battling against Construction Laborer Chris Davis and Apprentice Construction Laborer Dave Thomas from Queens Repairs. The Staten Island team emerged victorious from the timed challenge. Duhs and Cianciotta will move on to the New York Section regional competition, to be held on April 17 at New York’s Water Event in Saratoga Springs. Should they prevail on the statewide stage and advance, the Staten Island Repairs team would then head to the American Water Works Association ACE 19 national competition, held June 9–12, in Denver, Colorado. Best of luck to Steven and Joseph!
