New Water Quality Monitoring Buoys
Our Kingston field scientists deployed two new winter monitoring buoys last month on Ashokan Reservoir. These new models are cheaper, easier to use, and run on easily available D-size batteries. Winter monitoring buoys were first placed in Ashokan Reservoir in 2014, one in the reservoir’s East Basin, the other in the West Basin. The buoys have sensors that hang in the water and measure water temperature, turbidity, and conductivity. This provides scientists and water supply operators with a window into winter reservoir water quality, data that once was not easily available between December and March.
