Sloan Public Service Award
Huge congrats to our Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) Plant Chief Steven Cubero for being named a 2021 Sloan Public Service Award winner!
Two Outstanding Decades in Public Service
Plant Chief Cubero’s 21 year-long career began in his freshman year of college, where he worked as an electrician’s helper for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). After thirteen years at the MTA, Cubero transitioned to the Department of Environmental Protection in 2013 to work as a Stationary Engineer Electric at the Coney Island WRRF. In 2016, he was promoted to Deputy Plant Chief for the Newtown Creek WRRF. He remained in this role for only a year before he was asked to become the Plant Chief for the Tallman Island WRRF in College Point, Queens. He now serves as Plant Chief at the Newtown Creek WRRF.
The Newtown Creek WRRF is the largest of NYC’s 14 wastewater facilities and one of the five largest treatment plants in the United States. The five billion dollar facility sits on 53 acres in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and can process up to 720,000,000 gallons of wastewater in a single day, covering a service area of nearly one million people.
The Sloan Public Service Award
