How we Explored Citypop Through Colors
Our first meeting was in a chain coffee shop near NYRA’s office with Vintonic’s band member bringing the sample of their single, alongside several photographs and design elements for their brand. We were interested in their music first and foremost, a city pop inspired song with quintessential romantic Indonesian wordsmiths.
Heston, the producer and co-songwriter for the band, began explaining core aesthetics and concept; melancholic love story coupled with Indonesian inspired storytelling, all wrapped within the city pop sounds. Upon further discussion, we came up first with the emotional tone of orange glow and dark blue to represent the band’s melancholy.
Our second meeting was three days later in the studio for the photoshoot. We had come up with a simple look for the core visuals; a combination of minimalism, and emotional colors, involving no props or gimmicks to emphasize the band’s concentration to their music. The look was further emphasized by our talented makeup artist (Niken Nicula)’s dedication in maintaining the smooth-but-natural 80s look with the boys.
Overall, the visuals seem to capture the band’s core emotions and — dare we say — vintage feel. The graphic designer gave the visuals a weathered look for the final single album release cover (Complete with Mondrian-like aesthetics), completing the visual production journey with a bow on top.
You can check out their single album and stalk them through their Instagram below. While we do like the visuals our collaboration with them produced, their music would be quite an enjoyable experience for your ears.
