ESA @ EMRG Conference and pitch competition

Stern ESA attended the inaugural EMRG Conference to cheer on NYU startups

The event

On November 14th, the Ramenworks Accelerator hosted the inaugural EMRG Conference at the AWS Loft in SoHo.

ESA was on hand to see what the event had in store and to support NYU startups (Emcee, HealthHuddle, and aduri) in their pitches.

EMRG Conference agenda and competitors

The field

After narrowing the field down from over 100 applicants, 15 startups, made up of 31 student-founders across 8 industries, gave their pitches and made their case for $30K in cash and other prizes, such as free co-working space from nomadworks and legal advice from Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP.

Kim Kaupe (co-Founder, The Superfan Company) served as the event moderator for the day, which began with a panel of speakers: Puja Samuel, (Head of Platform, New York Life Ventures), and Joshua Ness (Verizon 5G Labs) speaking on what 5G has in store for the future.

Next, each team made their pitch followed by a short Q&A with the panel of judges: Lisa Burton (Executive Director, HearstLab), Isabelle Phelps, ( Associate, Lerer Hippeau), Allison Strouse (Program Director, NVP Labs).

And the winners are….

NYU’s own HealthHuddle, came in 3rd place, and also won the partner prize by nomadworks for free co-working space. The startup is working to improve clinical communications through the smart display of vital patient data, eliminating preventable medical errors.

Zogo Finance, came in 2nd place. Zogo’s app aims to make the financial relationship between parents and teens more educational and fun, while guiding teens to pay more attention to their finances.

Formally, a startup aiming to make asylum, immigration, and citizenship applications easier using form-filler technology, took 1st place.

We were impressed with the talent pool of those teams selected to pitch and the EMRG Conference as a whole, which was extremely well organized and did not have the feel of an inaugural event. We look forward to being on hand next year for the 2nd annual EMRG Conference!
