Our World Class Cyclist
David Farey hits the road again
September 18–21, 2015
David Farey, our very own Irrigation Technician, was up for his next challenge, the ultra distance Silver State 508 bike race. The Silver State 508 is the world’s premier weekend ultracycling race. This 508-mile bicycle race is revered the world over for its epic mountain climbs, stark desert scenery, desolate roads, and its reputation as one of the toughest but most gratifying endurance challenges available, bar none.
“My next ultra cycling adventure, The Silver State 508, will be a challenging but rewarding one. I will be completing this journey in the unsupported fixed gear class. In other words, I will not have a support crew during this race and I will be completing it on a fixed-gear bicycle.
With only one gear, I will have to pedal continuously.
A fixed-gear bike, or “fixie”, is a bicycle that only has one gear. You can not coast on a fixed-gear. It is a single speed without a freewheel: that is, whenever the bike is in motion, the pedals will go around. With only one gear, I will have to pedal continuously.”
David finished this race in under 38 hours. Here are the results for the Solo Randonneur Fixed Gear category.
