Athletics Return Entire Coaching Staff For 2019

Oakland, Calif. — The Oakland A’s announced today that the entire coaching staff will return to serve under Bob Melvin for the 2019 campaign.

Ryan Christenson, 44, returns for his second season as the Athletics bench coach. The former infielder is entering his 14th season with the organization, including five years as a minor league manager and seven seasons as a player.

Darren Bush, 44, will lead the offense for his third straight season as he will serve as the A’s hitting coach. He enters his 15th season with the organization, which includes two seasons as a minor league hitting coach, six seasons as a minor league manager and six seasons on the Major League coaching staff. Last season, the Athletics offense ranked second in the majors in doubles (322) and extra base hits (569), third in home runs (227), fourth in runs (813) and slugging (.439) and fifth in OPS (.764) in 2018 while setting an Athletics franchise record for extra base hits.

Scott Emerson, 46, will lead the pitching staff for his second full season. Prior to becoming the pitching coach on June 15, 2017, he served the coaching staff as the bullpen coach for two and a half seasons. He will enter his fifth season with the A’s Major League coaching staff and his 17th season with the organization.

Matt Williams, 52, returns for his second season as the A’s third base coach. This season will mark his ninth season on a Major League coaching staff, which included two seasons as manager of the Washington Nationals. Williams was named BBWAA and The Sporting News Manager of the Year in his first season after leading Washington to a 96–66 record and a National League East title.

Al Pedrique, 58, will man the other side of the field as he will serve as the Athletics first base coach for the second straight season. Pedrique will enter his sixth season on a Major League coaching staff. Prior to joining the A’s, he was a third base coach and interim manager for Arizona in 2004, third base coach for Houston in 2009 and bench coach for the Astros from 2010–11.

Marcus Jensen, 45, returns for his fifth season on the A’s Major League coaching staff and his 13th in the A’s organization. He will serve as the bullpen coach for the second straight year after serving as the A’s assistant hitting/catching coach from 2015–2017.

Mike Aldrete, 57, returns as the A’s assistant hitting coach. Aldrete has served the A’s for five consecutive seasons and the 2019 season will mark his 15th season on a Major League coaching staff. In 2015, he served as the A’s bench coach and spent the next two seasons as the A’s third base and outfield coach. Aldrete, who has served as bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2012–14, previously worked under Melvin as first base coach for the Seattle Mariners in 2004 and as hitting coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005–06.

Mark Kotsay, 42, will round out the coaching staff as he comes back to be the quality control coach. He enters for his second season as the quality control coach and his fourth season overall with the A’s. Kotsay joined the A’s as the bench coach in 2016 after making his professional coaching debut as the San Diego Padres hitting coach in 2015
