#385: The Foggy Street

It can be dark this time of year

The end of the street is missing. The houses are fading out of existence. The fog swallows the sky.

We have passed the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The daylight hours are short, the night is long, and even when there should be light, the sky is swarmed by fog.

I take my vitamin D and hope that my body is tricked into thinking it has seen the sun today. I turn on the fairylights of my Christmas tree and let the points of light reflect onto the baubles. I play ambient YouTube videos mimicking warm, crackling fires.

I think of the many light shows we now have in the UK at this time of year, illuminating our landmarks and turning forests into enchanted walkways.

Is it all trickery? Smoke and mirrors to help us remember the light that is slowly returning?

Or perhaps it is magic. Finding creative ways to light up the dark until the sun returns.
