Rollup Columns in Azure Boards

There is a new feature in Azure Boards that goes by the name of “rollup column”. I am very excited about this new feature, mostly because I get asked for it all the time.

For all those customers out there that track projects or work using Epics, or want to know how a feature is coming along, you will be very excited about this new feature.

Rollup Columns are implemented via Column Options on your backlog.

When you select Column options you will now see “Add a rollup column” option at the bottom. From here you can Configure your own custom rollup column or pick from a quick list of predefined rollup columns.

The result is a column added to the backlog that shows various rollups of data as either a progress bar or totals.

In this example I have added predefined columns that show progress by PBI as a progress bar, and sum of remaining work on all the child tasks as a total number.

The quick list is context sensitive to the backlog level, as you would expect. If you need something not listed in the quick list you can create your own custom rollup.
