It’s no secret that Hollywood loves a good remake; this year alone, there have been several to come out, and more are planned for this Fall. If it’s not remakes, it’s sequels to series that should have finished years ago. Here’s a list of horror movies that are neither remakes nor sequels but instead movie adaptations of some of the most heinous crimes in the history of humanity.

  1. Blue Caprice (2013)

Starring Isaiah Washington and Tequan Richmond, Blue Caprice follows the life of an abandoned boy lured to America and drawn into the shadow of a dangerous father figure. Blue Caprice was inspired by the events that led up to the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks. Also known as the D.C. sniper attacks, this series of coordinated shootings occurred during a three-week period in October 2002. Ten people were killed, and three others were critically wounded.

2. The Frozen Ground (2013)

In The Frozen Ground, Nicolas Cage plays Sgt. Jack Halcombe, an Alaskan State Trooper who, teams up with a young woman, played by Vanessa Hudgens, who has just escaped from a serial killer. The Frozen Ground is based on serial killer Robert Hansen who was responsible for the deaths of at least seventeen women in Anchorage, Alaska, during the 70s and 80s.
