One of the most common questions people ask about Obsidian is how they should set it up. On the Obsidian Discord, you can set your watch to the reply: depends on what you want to do, customize it to your workflow, and just start taking notes and let the structure emerge.

While these statements bear some truth, you can leverage common personal knowledge management patterns to accelerate your set-up. Based on your objective, you can start with well-known, well-worn starting points.

And that’s the question: what do you want to get out of your notes?

Imagine two years from now, and you’ve taken 100s or 1000s of notes. Imagine you want to look something up to find some information. What do you want to remember? What do you want to find? What do you want to reference and use?

Standard note patterns

A few common note-taking patterns have emerged that map to common types of things people want to capture or remember, and each of these patterns has a standard set-up you can use to kickstart your own PKM system.
