Jeju kick starts local Fine Dust and Weather Observation Network

Jeju Island, which attracts 15 million tourists annually, is building a smart city, a technology that checks real-time weather information at a bus stop was recently introduced. The key device behind this is the weather observation device “Weather Station” developed by meteorological big data corporation called Observer.

By using this device installed at a height of 2m in the bus stop, you can check the surrounding air temperature, air pressure, precipitation, and fine dust concentrations in real time. It is to get detailed weather information for each region through the electric signboard that is scheduled to be installed at the bus stop.

In particular, it was difficult to obtain detailed weather information in various parts of the province because of the large difference in weather by region. Accordingly, as part of the ‘Smart City’ project, Jeju Island has installed Observer’s Weather Station at 50 bus stops in the province and plans to increase the total number to 500–700 by the end of this year.

Hee Seop Noh, director of the Jeju Future Strategy Office, said, “Jeju-do has a well-established ‘public Wi-Fi’ communication network installed at major tourist attractions and bus stops, making it possible to provide accurate weather information to residents and tourists through Weather Station. We will collect information big data and develop a weather forecasting system for Jeju Island. ”

Previously, Jeju Island selected Observer as a public-private participation company to build a smart city and conducted a pilot project related to weather observation over three months. Observer is a startup selected as an official meteorological agency in November last year, and has meteorological equipment and data experts.

An official from the observer said, “Considering that there are about 40 weather stations in Jeju, we can expect finer weather forecasts by installing more weather station”.

Because Jeju Island has big weather differences in each neighborhood, it needs neighborhood weather forecast.

It is said that measurement device is installed at each bus stop so that you can know the weather in the neighborhood.

A bus stop can be seen next to Dolharbang and palm trees, symbolizing Jeju.

A white cylindrical device installed on one side of the stop can measure the weather in the area.

It is aka ‘Weather Station’.

Due to the large difference in weather in each neighborhood, it is difficult to obtain detailed weather information for each region.

-”There is a lot of changes. The east with Seongsan Ilchulbong has rained more than 100 millimeters… The west only has 30 to 40 millimeters a day.”

Weather Station measures ambient air temperature, precipitation, and fine dust concentrations.

It is currently installed at 50 bus stops and will increase to 700 this year.

-”After all the measuring device is installed, Jeju will also install an electronic display board where you can see the measured values on the spot at some stops.”

Considering that there are about 40 weather stations in Jeju, we can expect finer weather forecasts.

▶ Interview: Hee-Seop Noh / Director, Jeju Strategy

-”A sensor is also attached to the bus so that as the bus moves, it collects environmental information and provides services to residents and tourists ….”

Jeju Island plans to develop Jeju’s own weather forecasting system by collecting big data.
