Meet Jessica Wong, the First-Ever S.Y. & S.F. Fung Public Service Scholar

The University of Massachusetts Boston graduate student will be awarded $2,000 as part of OCA’s mission to increase AAPI participation in advocacy and government.

TODAY, OCA-ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN ADVOCATES is excited to announce Jessica Wong as the inaugural recipient of the S.Y. & S.F. Fung Public Service Scholarship, which awards $2,000 to an Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI) student pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Administration.

Meet Jessica Wong

Jessica Wong (she/her) is a second-generation bi-racial/Chinese American. Jessica serves as the Director of Programming for the Massachusetts Asian American Pacific Islander Commission (AAPIC). Jessica is a full-time graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Boston concentrating on Public Administration and Asian American Studies. Aside from AAPIC and her studies, she is the Community Engagement Specialist with Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence (ATASK) and serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee under Mayor Paul Coogan in Fall River, MA.

Prior to her current engagements, Jessica dedicated two years of public service with the AmeriCorps Program. Through her service with AmeriCorps, she founded a women’s empowerment group called W.A.V.E (Women. Action. Voice. Empowerment) and served as the lead facilitator of “Confronting Discrimination” with the Fall River Youth Violence Prevention Task Force.

In her free time, Jessica is a planning committee member of Thrillah in the Rivah, a bboy/bgirl jam to highlight hip-hop culture amongst communities of color. Overall she is committed to expanding access to power, opportunity, and education for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Meet the scholarship sponsor, Anthony Fung

Anthony Fung served as Deputy Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia. In this capacity, Anthony served as a senior advisor to the Commonwealth on technology matters including, data analytics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, innovation and entrepreneurship, and technology operations.

Anthony is a proven executive with over 23 years of experience in information technology management, strategic planning, and operations management. Before joining the Governor’s Cabinet, Anthony was the CEO of a professional consulting firm, which serviced Federal focused clients such as DoD, HHS, DHS, and GSA. Anthony also served as a SCORE counselor, providing advice to small businesses on start-up best practices, business operations, and strategy.

He serves on the board of CodeVA, VCU Innovation Gateway, and OCA Central Virginia Chapter. Anthony has been recognized as one of Washington’s top business leaders, recipient of Washington Business Journal’s Award, SmartCEO Top 100 CEOs, and named Top 40 Under 40 Business Leader.

The S.Y. & S.F. Fung Public Service Scholarship Fund is in honor of Anthony Fung’s mother and father, who worked as a nurse at a public hospital and a high school teacher, respectively.
