The Occam Association is pleased to announce that Occam.fi is the leading sponsor for the upcoming Cardano community-led Experiential virtual hackathon. Organised by ADA MakerSpace, the Experiential hackathon will feature unique challenges and opportunities for Cardano developers, with funds available for challenge winners. The hackathon is also sponsored by official Cardano engineers IOHK, the association of stake pool operators SPOCRA, and more.

ADA MakerSpace offers Plutus & Marlowe development workshops, as well as open-source Cardano NFT, DApps, DeFi, and smart contracts creation lessons. It’s Experiential virtual hackathon, the first of its kind, runs from the 13th of August through until the 29th, of August 2021. During the event, attendees can catch expert Cardano key-note speakers, as well as attend developer workshops.

Boone Bergsma, Co-founder of ADA MakerSpace, says:

“Hackathons are one of the most effective ways of attracting the best talent to solve difficult development challenges and collaborate on projects. As we sprint towards Alonzo, we are closer than ever to realizing a truly distributed ecosystem of decentralized applications for Cardano — led by the community, for the community. We’re stoked that Occam.fi shares this vision, and supports our grassroots hackathon!”

In addition to prizes for challenge winners, Occam.fi will make spaces available for fast-track inclusion in their Cardano incubator program, Occelerator.

Elliot Hill, Head of Communications at Occam.fi, says:

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work alongside ADA Maker Space during their Experiential Hackathon. Community-led hackathons are instrumental in pushing power to the edges, and proving our commitment to the Cardano ecosystem. We aren’t content with simply throwing money at problems. Instead, we are opening the doors for a collaborative approach with the most engaged members of the Cardano community, and we think that is the most powerful way to bring about tangible progress and change.”

Occam.fi’s developer challenges will be focused on areas of high-importance for building and implementing its components on the Cardano blockchain, ahead of the roll-out of smart contracts through the Alonzo hard fork.

The specific challenges that Occam.fi will be sponsoring are as follows:

  1. The creation of a Haskell module to manipulate Cardano addresses (i.e. create random Byron, Shelley, stake addresses, etc.), which is currently only possible through the command line,
  2. The creation of a Haskell module to allow for estimation of transaction size for different transactions based on complexity for each transaction. The module would allow developers to call it and provide different custom transactions, then receive estimated fees as an output.

Further details of each specific challenge will follow shortly. This is one of the first steps towards a fully-fledged RFP scheme for Occam.fi — a community-focused trial to see how we can empower Cardano developers through regular challenges.
