Pride in London

Well over a million people took to the streets of London to make sure this year’s celebration the largest ever. Parade groups marched through London bursting with colour, music and dance as they marked 50 years since the Stonewall uprising in New York.

According to the BBC, the march featured more than 30,000 people from over 600 businesses, groups, and organisations. The Red Arrows were even brought in for a flypast.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan launched the Pride parade. He said the ‘huge, huge’ progress in gay rights was to be treasured but also warned much more needed to be done.

The Parade ran from Portland Place station to Trafalgar Square. Many famous faces were among those marching, including Little Mix, Sir Ian McKellen, and Sam Smith.

Pride organisers also tried to make the parade as eco-friendly as possible by continuing to be plastic free and using refillable bottles for volunteers. They previously announced they aimed to make the event carbon neutral by 2020 after declaring a climate emergency inspired by Extinction Rebellion.
