Before there was writing, there was mass persuasion.

Whether it was in the cave, around the campfire or on the hunt, the storyteller performed the dual function for the community of creating meaning and reinforcing connection. These values were crucial to the survival and future of the tribe.

As time passed, the power of the storyteller over the tribe grew. Since all of this developed well before the invention of writing by the Sumerians around 3200 B.C., we can only speculate as to exactly how this took place. (1)

In support of man’s search for meaning and direction, the storytellers were responsible for the creation myths that guided ancient mankind. Eventually, some storytellers claimed to have direct contact with the gods and/or goddesses described in these myths. They became the first shamans or priests. In order to increase their popularity and influence, some storytellers even claimed to be incarnations of or descendants of a mythological deity, setting the stage for the great global religions of today.
