While America is thought by many of its citizens to still be a model of democracy, America as “the land of the free” has never existed.

This is not a radical statement or anarchist position.

It is a plain and simple fact that the founding fathers of this country conceived of its future in terms of rulership by an elite wealthy few over the unsophisticated masses. They were extremely concerned by the potential instability of pure Athenian democracy, as it gave too much power to the poorly educated majority. They developed a “representative democracy” where elected representatives ran the government and ruled the people. (110)

As radical as this may sound, that America was designed from the beginning to be run by the advantaged few over the disadvantaged many, here are the words of James Madison, the Father of the United States Constitution, and the Fourth President of the United States, as recorded in Notes of the Secret Debates of the Federal Convention of 1787.
