English version

(There’s a norwegian version here)

This year is the year of the marching bands in Norway — it’s the 100th anniversary. Every marching band of Norway is member of NMF (Norges Musikk-korps Forbund). To kick start the celebration they wanted to film several marching bands all over the country from the Nordkapp to the very south Lindesnes.

The production started with shooting the first location in May/June 2017 and lasted until September. The video starts at the royal palace where we filmed the crown prince saying what’s going on. With me (Atle) as cinematographer, drone operator and editor travelled Berit Handegard who is the project manager from NMF. Together then, we travelled around Norway and filmed marching bands (e.g. Trondheim, Bergen, Stavangar, Lillehammer, Oslo). An agency called NOR-PR helped getting the film on TV (a short version for NMF and NRK). Hence, I could focus on the creative part and NOR-PR helped with marketing and publishing which was nice, because they could give feedback and knew how to publish it later. It went pretty well. The finished film got shown on NRK channel at New Years Day. The engagement from the people watching it, was very good — it got a lot of views and worked well as starter for the anniversary year.

But of course, also some difficulties occured. There was a specific soundtrack that every marching band was supposed to play. But when I was going to synchronize it later with the recording of the music, I recogned that every marching band played it differently in a different rhythm. So one band spend 1 minute on it and another spend 2 minutes while others played something completely different. That got a little interesting. It’s easy faking a clarinet to the music but faking a drummer is not for example. Additionally, the final soundtrack was recorded after filming. Luckily we filmed enough with every band, so it wasn’t hopeless in the end. This project had some advantages: I finally got to the Nordkapp! I’ve never been there before. That was nice. And I got to film the crown prince. It was a little starstruck moment, because I like the royal family a lot! It was fun to travel around with Berit. Even though we came there and every band was differently prepared she stood calm and trusted me in what I was doing. Nevertheless, the main highlight was to actually see it on TV. Although I wished I had have more time on each location (like in many projects), I had time but not enough with the actual marching band I’m happy with the result. — Atle Remmereit
