Here’s what you should avoid when you’re building a YouTube Empire

So, you want to be the next Zoella? Well, we can see that you are well on your way with your amazing content and your unique, relatable persona. But there are a few things you want to avoid when you are building a YouTube empire.

These things can easily cause you to burnout, feel discouraged, or make you lose your unique YouTube persona trying to ‘fit in’. Luckily, there aren’t many things on this list. The great thing about YouTube is it really is open to interpretation. But here are a few things you should try and avoid:

Doing too many trend or challenge videos

Applying foundation with a condom? Dunking your face in a bowl of ice to set your makeup? All of these things can give you a quick burst of popularity and subscribers — but if that level of daring isn’t the real you, you will quickly burnout and feel unhappy trying to maintain a persona you don’t really believe in.

It might be a bit slower this way, but you should try to build your channel by making videos that make you happy. Sure, you might get 20k subscribers overnight doing a challenge video. But after a few months when you get 20k subscribers doing videos that suit your personality better, you’ll know that they are your real fans who love the real you.

Don’t worry though, it’s still okay to do challenge videos occasionally. I mean, they are really fun.

Getting involved in YouTube drama

On such a crowded platform, spats and disagreements between influencers are bound to happen. However, you do not want to get involved or broadcast the drama on YouTube, even if the drama may involve you. It can sometimes seem tempting when you see other YouTubers getting so popular by broadcasting their drama to the world. But again, unless that is the persona you want to convey, you might find that long-term that strategy won’t work for you.

So again, be true to yourself!

Keeping up with the Joneses

Like any aspect of your life, it can sometimes feel like someone is always doing better than you. On YouTube that can mean better camera equipment, insane editing, or crazy brand sponsorships.

You might think — if I just get this camera, or if I just buy this editing software I too can be YouTube famous.

But it is important to resist that and let your channel grow and develop organically. It’s great to have goals and aspirations for your channel, but make sure you aren’t working so hard to achieve your goals that you make yourself unhappy. Remember, YouTube should be fun first — you’ll conquer your business goals in your own time.
