Julian Schnabel-done

Julian Schnabel is both an artist and film director from New York.

His film career is studded with highlights, nominations and awards, but his career in art is plated…

The whole of life is just like watching a film. Only it’s as though you always get in ten minutes after the big picture has started, and no-one will tell you the plot, so you have to work it out all yourself from the clues.”
― Terry Pratchett, Moving Pictures

Schnabel’s journey

into the world of visual art began with his admittance to the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He landed the opportunity by submitting a literal art sandwich — multiple slides of his work between two pieces of bread.

He’d go on to become the youngest artist to participate in the esteemed ‘A New Spirit in Painting’ exhibition in the Royal Academy of Arts, and make movies, of course.

“Cinema is the ultimate pervert art. It doesn’t give you what you desire — it tells you how to desire.”
― Slavoj Žižek

Schnabel’s major claim to fame in the art world is his collection of paintings on fractured plates.

His massive plate paintings feature colorful portraits and surreal scenes with a unique, caricaturesque feel to them.

For the time being, this unique painter and director

still resides in New York, in his own version of an Italian Palazzo which he’s named “Palazzo Chupi” and painted entirely pink.
