Ode to Coffee Cake from Scratch

There is an end all be all cure
for that first morning
when you get smacked back into the blankets
by the sum total of a cold night’s chill:
coffee cake

Easy to make, easy to bake
But the qualitative complexity of the aromas
finding their way past the front door and beyond
could unlock the keys to the universe.

Not complex at all: that person who says
“Just a small piece for me.”
You’ll later see them eating
straight from the baking pan, several times.

All is as it should be.

Let’s not do anything today, except:
put on another pot of coffee
(and also: not feel bad that we’re going to eat
the whole damn thing).

You actually can have your cake
and eat it, too, when it comes to coffee cake.
