Some think Crypto Currencies will displace our current government money. Some think autonomous vehicles will make human drivers obsolete. There are folks who speculate about human minds being uploaded to the Internet. Some even think the robots will take over the Earth.

Having idealistic views about the future is probably one of the more fun things about being an entrepreneur and investor in early stage companies. We dream about things that don’t exist and then we try to make them a reality.

Sometimes people take these daydreams too far. They get carried away with slippery slope arguments about how easy change will be.

The Truth is that change takes time and it is usually messy.

I like to write about the idea the “Progress is Inevitable” because I believe that in the fullness of time many great things will emerge. Way better than we can currently envision.

But I also realize that the path from here to there will involve deep failure. We may even have big wars and almost certainly big market collapses between here and that future state.

Acknowledging that change is hard and our daydreams might not be as easy as they seem is the beginning of being real about what Progress looks like. It acknowledges the struggle. That we have to fight for the change we believe in.

And that we have to be realistic about the timelines we set for our audacious dreams and aspirations.

But let’s keep dreaming.
