A close contest was on the cards in Parliament between NDA nominee Harivansh Narayan Singh and joint opposition candidate BK Hariprasad for the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman, with both sides claiming majority support. However, the NDA candidate with support of other allies prevailed with a margin of 125 against 105 votes.

While some parties, notably the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the YSR Congress decided to abstain from the voting, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) were backing the eventual winner, Shri Harivansh Narayan Singh from the JD(U), through a statement made by Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik.

The post of the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman had been lying vacant since June following the retirement of PJ Kurien. The current strength of Rajya Sabha is 244 members.

Congratulations to the winning candidate.
