Being a college student doesn’t mean you have to settle down for any low-wage jobs and scrape by on a thin budget. If you’ve never heard of or considered teaching English online, there are a few reasons you should. Firstly, it’s flexible. You can teach anywhere and anytime from your own computer. Secondly, it doesn’t take long to apply, get hired, and start working. For most online ESL companies, the process takes 10–15 days. Thirdly, it pays well (up to $21 per hour). Lastly, you can learn a lot about teaching and interact with children and even adults from other cultures. Perhaps you’ll find education your true passion… or not. But why don’t you give it a try?!

For most online ESL jobs, you’ll need a desktop or laptop equipped with a webcam, as well as a high-quality headset with microphone. High-speed Internet and stable connection are also required. You’ll need to have a Bachelor’s degree or to be currently enrolled in a college program. For some companies, a TEFL/ TESOL teaching certificate (which can be easily obtained online or onsite) and teaching experiences are preferred. You won’t have to prepare your own teaching materials nor recruit your own students though, the online ESL companies will take care of that.

Here are the top 5 online English teaching jobs for college students:

1. Say ABC

SayABC pays ESL teachers up to $21 per a 40-minute lesson ($15 base and $6 bonus based on attendance and productivity). Once you’re hired and signed a contract with SayABC, you’ll teach the same group of four students twice a week, consistently for three months. The students are from five to 12 years old. You can sometimes teach trial classes as well and get paid $8 per each converted student.

However, they do offer short-term internships to students majoring in education. You must also have a native level of English. You won’t need to prepare your own teaching materials but must review the lessons provided before each class.

Based on what I heard from the Online ESL Reviews community, SayABC teaching materials are quite fun and engaging with lots of visuals, songs, games, video activities, National Geography pictures, and so on.
