On the morning of Friday, November 21, 1958, in Genesee County’s Flint, Michigan, Adele Wells found herself unable to attend school due to a mild cold. However, as the morning progressed she had a change of heart and made the decision to go to school after all. The 7-year-old stepped out the door of her home at 929 East Marengo and first walked the block to her grandmother’s house since it was only a few blocks from her school, Jefferson Elementary. At the time, she reportedly had wanted to show her grandmother how nice her mother had done her hair that day.

Eventually, the second-grader left her grandmother’s house at around 11:30 a.m. to walk the rest of the way to school, yet for reasons that elude answers to this day, Adele never made it there, nor did she return home.
